As joias também se usam nos dentes, mas há regras a seguir

Jewellery is also worn on teeth, but there are rules to follow

The aesthetic trends of the 2000s continue to make a strong comeback and have even reached teeth. Ricardo Maia, a dentist, explains how tooth piercings are applied.

Just like tattoos, hair colors and cuts, or makeup, so-called tooth piercings are a form of expression. They come in a wide variety of colors, textures, and sizes, allowing everyone to fully express their individuality and creativity.

This tooth embellishment trend was dominant in the late 90s and early 2000s and is now back in fashion. But how are these accessories applied? Are they semi-permanent? Is there any drilling of the tooth? And how much do they cost?

Versa spoke with Ricardo Maia, a dentist at Clínica Santa Madalena, who clarifies all doubts.

How are they applied? Is there any drilling or more invasive intervention on the tooth?

This type of piercing does not require any drilling or modification of the natural tooth. It is a very quick procedure, about 20 minutes, where an adhesive and sometimes a resin are applied, a method very similar to placing an orthodontic bracket on a fixed brace.

What materials are they made of? What are the best materials?

There are different types of materials, as well as shapes, sizes, and colors. The most common are: rhinestones, projected glass, but in some cases, they can also be jewels such as silver or gold.

How long do they last?

Generally up to 6 months

Are there any contraindications?

There are no contraindications regarding the placement of this type of piercing

What are the main precautions to take?

Greater care in oral hygiene, especially when brushing the piercing area, which should be done gently and around the piece to prevent it from coming loose and to avoid the accumulation of tartar and bacterial plaque.

How much can they cost in Portugal?

Between €75 and €100 for the most common materials.
