Saúde oral sénior. 10 perguntas e respostas

The most common problems are cavities, gum disease, tooth loss, dry mouth (xerostomia), and oral cancer.

2- If I have several health problems, can I safely undergo dental treatments?

Yes, and it's important to visit the dentist regularly. Inform your dentist about all your health problems and the medications you are taking. This way, the dental treatment will proceed safely.

3- Is it important to keep natural teeth?

Yes, we should try to keep natural teeth; a single tooth can serve as a retention point for a removable denture for several years.

4- What are the most serious problems that can arise from the loss of natural teeth?

Aesthetic, phonetic, and functional changes; the loss of just one tooth can cause others to shift position, leading to a change in bite.

5- If my teeth are wobbly or my gums bleed and hurt, what should I do?

You should urgently see a dentist so that they can assess the state of your mouth, possibly an oral hygiene to remove bacterial plaque and/or tartar, which are the cause of this situation.

6- What should I do to maintain the health of my teeth?

Brush at least twice a day;
Use interdental brushes;
Tongue scraper;
Use a mouthwash for two minutes at the end.

7- Is it worth getting dental prostheses to replace lost natural teeth?

Yes, always as soon as possible to help with chewing, swallowing, phonetics, and aesthetic aspects.

8- What care should I take with removable dentures?

Denture maintenance requires some care:

  • Cleaning dentures and natural teeth, if any, after meals;
  • Cleaning with a special brush for dentures;
  • Remove dentures at night for the mucous membranes to rest, except in rare cases;
  • Store in water.

9- Even without natural teeth, should I consult the dentist?

Yes. Over time, oral tissues undergo changes, and lesions can appear which, if uncontrolled, can become malignant. People with complete dentures experience changes in their mucous membranes and denture maladjustments that should be corrected to avoid sores and serious lesions.

10- Can I get dental implants if I can't adapt to removable dentures?

Yes, whenever you need to, you can always ask your dentist to assess bone availability, and in that way, you can get a fixed prosthesis which will be more comfortable and easier to get used to than a removable prosthesis.
